NAV: Romanian driver who was checked on the M43 highway hid hundreds of liters of alcohol among furniture
Several hundred liters of alcohol were hidden among the furniture by the Romanian driver who was checked by the tax inspectors of the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) at the Kéthalám rest area on the M43 motorway.
The tax inspectors told MTI on Wednesday that the tax inspectors had diverted a Moldovan-registered van from the M43 motorway for a routine check; the truck was transporting various pieces of furniture to Ireland.
When the cargo compartment was searched, it was revealed that various alcoholic products, cigarettes without Hungarian stamps and some smoking tobacco were hidden under the furniture.
During the check, the driver approached the tax inspectors and offered money to avoid the procedure, but the authority’s staff notified the Szeged Regional Investigative Prosecutor’s Office, which launched an investigation for a corruption crime.
The tax inspectors seized more than 300 liters of alcohol of unverified origin, 20 packs of cigarettes without Hungarian stamps, and some tobacco, worth a total of more than 700 thousand forints, and initiated proceedings for violation of excise laws, the statement says.
