NAV: customs officers handled more than 50 percent more small packages last year

The number of small packages requiring customs clearance from abroad increased by 50 percent last year compared to 2024, the Deputy President for Customs and International Affairs of the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) told MTI on the occasion of International Customs Day.

Major General Kristóf Péter Bakai added that while in 2024 the NAV handled 136 million low-value shipments (under 150 euros), last year the number of packages exceeded 204 million.

At the same time, the volume of goods cleared through customs in Hungary remained practically unchanged, amounting to slightly more than 23 million tons. Last year, goods worth a total of approximately 18 thousand billion forints arrived in the European Union via Hungary. Customs revenue reached 154 billion forints in 2025, and import VAT amounted to 504 billion forints, while in 2024 it was 121 billion and import VAT was 458 billion forints – the deputy chairman explained.

The Hungarian Customs Administration has a key role in protecting the EU customs border, so that illegal products cannot enter the EU market and do not endanger the health and lives of Hungarian customers – he emphasized.

He highlighted:

e-commerce traffic from third countries has been growing dynamically for years. The data related to incoming small packages is examined by the NAV risk analysis system, which helps to select those shipments that require further inspection.

“We check these with X-ray equipment and physical examinations. In addition to items selected based on electronic risk analysis, suspicious or randomly selected packages received are also examined by customs officers using service dogs”

– explained Kristóf Péter Bakai.

International Customs Day – celebrated by the World Customs Organization on January 26 every year – focuses on The Deputy President underlined that the activities of customs authorities are not only decisive in securing budget revenues, but are also essential in protecting the economy, strengthening public safety and maintaining fair trade, while introducing the motto of this year’s holiday: “A vigilant and committed customs authority in protecting society.”
