NAK Hungarians also participate in the pan-European farmers’ demonstration
More than 100 participants will leave Hungary for Brussels this week for the pan-European farmers’ demonstration on Thursday, the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) and the Association of Hungarian Farmers’ Associations and Cooperatives (Magosz) told MTI on Monday.
The organizers expect participants from all EU member states to come to the event, almost 10,000 in total. The demonstration was announced by Copa-Cogeca, which brings together European farmers’ organizations, because, based on the Commission proposal published in July, agricultural subsidies would be reduced by more than 20 percent in the EU budget cycle between 2028 and 2034 and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) would be abolished. The European Commission plans to make decisions without thorough preparation, consultation and impact assessments, putting EU producers at a competitive disadvantage, the statement reads. The interest groups also demand that Brussels not conclude trade agreements with non-EU countries that endanger European farmers and pose a food safety risk. Imports from Ukraine, Brazil or Morocco are not subject to EU food safety regulations, yet they can enter the European market without checks, they warned. They also consider it important that the agricultural budget and area-based income support are not reduced, and they called it unacceptable that farmers who have reached retirement age and receive old-age pensions should not receive such support. News of the changes is causing anger across Europe, and Hungarian producers have also reacted with outrage. Together with them, Magosz and NAK also demand a complete change of direction from the European Commission – they stated in the statement.
