Based on the government’s decision, producers will not have to pay agricultural water service fee this year either – the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) told MTI on Monday.

The fee exemption applies to those who irrigate their agricultural areas from surface water under a water rights operation permit or under extraordinary irrigation water use. The decision was initiated by the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Water Management, of which NAK and the Association of Hungarian Farmer Associations and Cooperatives (Magosz) are also members – they wrote.

According to the statement, water management in Hungary has been put on new foundations in recent years, with increasing emphasis on water retention interventions that fit into the landscape

More than 4 thousand hectares of the almost 30 thousand hectares offered for such purposes are being flooded, stabilizing the water balance and water cycle. More than 5,000 sections of canals have been closed to retain water, and water resources can be preserved on another 10,000 kilometers with minor interventions, they added. No significant flood waves have yet occurred this year, but backwaters have begun to be filled from smaller ones. The results show that cooperation between sectors and shaping social attitudes can significantly improve water management in agricultural areas, the statement reads.
