NAK – FruitVeb: from the beginning of June, even more cherries will be on the market
Thanks to the early varieties, the cherry season started early, but a larger quantity can be expected on the domestic market from the beginning of June – the National Chamber of Agrarian Economy and FruitVeb, the Hungarian Vegetable and Fruit Association, told MTI on Friday.
The harvest was reduced in some places, especially in the counties of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and Zala, by frost damage in April, but the cool spring did not favor the producers either, which hindered the work of the bees, so the fertilization of the trees remained incomplete in some places. At the national level, the development of the harvest is therefore varied depending on the variety and region, but overall it is better than the average, as the loss is smaller than in previous years. The development of the amount still depends on the rainfall during the ripening period, but based on the current forecast, NAK and FruitVeb expect a harvest of 12 thousand tons or slightly more. In Hungary, in good years, 10-15 thousand tons of cherries are usually harvested.
There will therefore be no quantity problems, but the small size of the fruit may cause sales problems, according to the announcement, and due to the rainy weather, the fruits should also be protected from cracking. Exports are expected to be at the level of previous years, i.e. around a thousand tons, and are primarily directed to neighboring countries and the Baltics. Imports are two to three times that amount, mostly coming from Turkey, mostly at the same time as the domestic season, they added.
