NAK-FruitVeb: the apricot season will be long this year
The apricot season started earlier than usual and may last longer this year – the National Chamber of Agricultural Economy (NAK) and FruitVeb, the Hungarian Association of Vegetables and Fruits, told MTI on Thursday.
Harvesting of the early varieties started already in the second half of May, that is, almost 2 weeks earlier than usual. The harvest will not be as weak as last year, but the quantity will not reach the level before last year, a total of 16-18 thousand tons domestically. Transdanubia was better spared by the spring frosts, the crop loss is more significant in the central and northern parts of the country. So far, there are no quality problems, but frostbite and fungal diseases can cause problems in some places, they wrote.
According to the announcement, the domestic production area is about 5 thousand hectares, the most important production areas are located in the counties of Bács-Kiskun, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Fejér, Pest, Somogy and Tolna. The yield fluctuates due to frost damage from year to year, it can even exceed 35 thousand tons, but in 2023 only 6-8 thousand tons were produced.
