Since its launch on January 19, more than 120 thousand farmers and consumers have joined the signature collection of the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) and the Association of Hungarian Farmers’ Associations and Cooperatives (MAGOSZ) – the NAK President stated in an interview published on the Agrokult.hu website on Sunday.

Zsolt Papp said that the more than 120 thousand signatures are a clear and powerful social signal, which shows that both farmers and consumers feel the gravity of the situation. “Producers are afraid that their livelihoods and the future of Hungarian agriculture are at risk,” he said. Zsolt Papp. He added that consumers are afraid that the market could be flooded with imported foods whose production does not comply with the strict rules that European farmers adhere to. According to the president of the chamber, one of the most important messages of the petition is that the interests of farmers and consumers are common. Hungarian families want to put safe, controlled, high-quality food on the table, and farmers work to ensure this, he said.

He pointed out that if domestic producers become insolvent, it will pose a risk to everyone in the long run.

According to Zsolt Papp, in recent years the leadership of the European Union has taken or prepared a number of measures that are contrary to the interests of farmers and European citizens. “The plan to cut agricultural subsidies by more than 20 percent, or the imposition of trade agreements that apply double standards, such as the Mercosur agreement, are all steps that weaken European agriculture and endanger the health of consumers,” he said in an interview with the portal.

The president of the NAK indicated that the aim of the petition is for European decision-makers to hear this message.

“We will continue to collect signatures so that we have even stronger authority behind us. The 120,000 signatures indicate that the fate of Hungarian agriculture is not indifferent to the people,” he said, and encouraged everyone to join the signature collection launched by NAK and MAGOSZ, which is available on the agrarpeticio.hu website.
