NAK: April frosts caused significant damage
April frosts caused significant damage to many orchards. Farmers have the opportunity to partially mitigate the damage through the agricultural damage mitigation system – the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) pointed out on Wednesday.

Between April 6 and 9, there were unusually strong night frosts, which caused significant damage to flowering orchards. Damage notification must be made within fifteen days of the occurrence of the agricultural damage event. Since the deadline for notification falls within the period of submitting the single application, the notification deadline is extended to May 31, 2025 at the latest – the NAK pointed out. In the case of spring frosts that cause a decrease in yield, the occurrence of the agricultural damage event should be considered the time when the frost occurs in the area affected by the damage – they added.
During the mentioned period, the temperature dropped permanently below minus 2 degrees Celsius at night in many places
This can cause significant crop losses in flowering crops, but frosts below minus 4 and minus 6 degrees Celsius also occurred. Apricots and almonds have bloomed almost nationwide, while peaches, cherries, sour cherries and plums are just starting to bloom or are already blooming, and frosts caused serious damage to these crops – even with protection – – the NAK reported. It was recalled that, as the Ministry of Agriculture also provided information, the agricultural damage mitigation system creates an opportunity to partially mitigate the damage caused by spring frost. It is definitely worth submitting an electronic damage report to the agricultural damage assessment body (Vár County Government Office) for farmers affected by spring frost damage. This is necessary so that – if the other support conditions are met – the producers can receive compensation for the damages later. In order to be eligible for the damage mitigation benefit, it is necessary to act carefully when reporting the damage. NAK village economists will provide assistance to farmers nationwide in submitting damage reports – the chamber recommended.
