NAK: 19 Hungarian products took the lead in the world’s most prestigious cheese competition
At the world’s most prestigious cheese competition, the World Cheese Awards held in Portugal, the products of Hungarian small-scale and artisanal cheesemakers received 2 gold, 9 silver and 8 bronze awards, the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) told MTI on Wednesday.
The World Cheese Awards were held this year in Viseu, Portugal, and 4,786 cheeses from 47 countries participated, which were evaluated by 240 jury members from 40 countries – including cheese experts, technologists, cheese judges, cheese merchants, gastronomic journalists and chefs.
Of the 12 finalist cheeses, the cheese of the year was chosen as the Queijo de Ovelha Amanteigado cheese from the Portuguese Quinta do Pomar cheese factory, which is a soft sheep’s cheese made from raw milk with vegetable rennet.
According to the announcement, the NAK training program series, which ranges from basic technological training in Mosonmagyaróvár organized with the Hungarian Dairy Research Institute to study trips to France organized by the chamber, also contributed to the year-on-year improvement of Hungarian cheesemakers’ results.
The chamber, together with the Milk Interprofessional Organization and Product Council, also supports the Hungarian Cheesemakers’ Association in the interests of developing Hungarian cheese culture and shaping consumer attitudes, they added.
