Onions have become much more expensive

According to data from AKI PÁIR, the producer price of brown-skinned onions (harvested this year) at the Budapest Wholesale Market was HUF 276/kg, exceeding the average price in the same period of 2024 by 39% in weeks 23-40 of 2025.

The price of smaller onions grew by 45% to HUF 283/kg. Larger onions appeared on the market in week 32, with the producer price rising by 37% to HUF 261/kg in weeks 32-40 of 2025 compared to a year earlier. According to data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH), onion production in Hungary has ranged between 50,000 and 73,000 tonnes over the past five years.

Processors and traders purchased high oleic sunflower seeds (HO) for HUF 217,500/tonne (+28%) and high oil sunflower seeds (LO) for HUF 192,500/tonne (+24%) in the second week of September. The average producer price of industrial sunflower seeds (including high oleic acid sunflower seeds) was HUF 204,200/tonne (+28%) excluding VAT and transport costs. Based on information from the Ministry of Agriculture, Hungarian farmers harvested 5.4 million tonnes of wheat in 2025, with an average yield of 5.6 tonnes per hectare.
