Beer can become more expensive and taste worse
As a result of climate change, hops, an important raw material for beer, are facing quality and quantity problems. As a result, beer may become more expensive in the future as hops may cost more to produce.
European hop production areas are expected to experience a decline of 4-18 percent by 2050, unless growers adapt to a warmer and drier climate. According to the researchers, the alpha acid content, which affects the taste and aroma of beer, will also decrease by 20-31 percent.
Hops are usually grown in temperate climates and can be found in countries such as Germany or the Czech Republic. However, due to climate change, cultivation can be challenging as hops are sensitive to temperature, sunlight and water levels.
The researchers also observed that hop yields have declined sharply in recent years, with significant declines in various areas. Some producers try to adapt to the conditions, for example by creating plantations in higher areas or by irrigation.
If climate policy does not change, a further decrease in hop yields can be expected by 2050, mainly due to warmer weather and frequent droughts. As a result, the cost of beer production may increase and the price of beer may increase.
