The bees suffered a great loss, less honey is expected
One-third of bees died in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County during the winter. Because of the less productive bees, it is likely that there will be less rape and acacia honey this year – the consultant of the National Hungarian Beekeeping Association (OMME) of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County told MTI on Tuesday.
Molnár Ferenc said that not only the big cold caused the loss of bees, but the Asian varroa acne pest also weakened the bees’ immune system. He noted that approximately one third of the 55,000 beehives of the 1156 county beekeepers died in the winter. 20 percent of the remaining stock is not productive, which means that about 27 thousand bee families – half of the original stock – will be productive.
