The first store of a large British chain opened in Hungary
The long-established British retail chain, WHSmith, entered a new market and opened its first store in Hungary. The 1,200 square meter store is located on the departure side of Terminal 2B of Liszt Ferenc Airport and is part of the expansion process during which WHSmith plans to open more than a hundred new stores worldwide in the next year.
Budflyer drew attention to WHSmith’s entry into the Hungarian market, and although it is not yet clear whether the company plans to open more stores in Hungary, it is already clear that the company has come with serious intentions.
Founded in 1792, WHSmith began its journey as a family business, originally as a newspaper shop. However, over the decades it grew into a network, and in 1828 the retail chain WHSmith was officially established. It celebrated its 231st anniversary last year and is now the UK market leader.
WHSmith’s main profile is the retailing of books, newspapers and stationery, but over the years their product range has broadened. Local products, electronics, food and drinks can also be found in their shops.
