István Nagy: Farmers can count on us, we will protect our vineyards!
The sector’s stakeholders have discussed coordinated measures and support against the American grapevine cicada, which spreads golden yellows, with the National Council of Mountainous Communities (HNT), announced István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture. The head of the ministry reported on the details on his social media page, emphasizing that the government’s action plan will protect our vineyards.

The Minister of Agriculture highlighted that the situation is serious, as the entire Hungarian grapevine population is at risk. The pathogen is already present in 13 of the 19 counties in our country. Zala and the areas around Lake Balaton are particularly severely affected. István Nagy stressed that the disease does not pose any danger to humans and does not spread to wine, but it can cause extraordinary damage to grapes. That is why joint and immediate action is needed to curb golden yellows. “The government has adopted an action plan and allocated 3.8 billion forints to combat the American grapevine cicada, which spreads golden yellows. We will use this to solve inspections, reconnaissance and chemical treatment. Moreover, if necessary, we will also support the replanting of plantations,” said the Minister, assuring grape growers that the government will lend a helping hand in this situation as well.
As part of the action plan, a nationwide reconnaissance will be launched. The National Council of Mountainous Communities will set up inspection groups of 6-8 people, which will visit vineyard areas across the country
For the purpose of pre-screening, the Nébih mobile laboratory vehicle will also carry out on-site measurements. “Spring protection is of great importance, but the cicada population can also be reduced with post-harvest treatments, which is why a national pesticide program is being launched. We will do everything we can to protect your vineyards,” the Minister of Agriculture said.
