István Nagy: food sovereignty and food security are the most important
Last Sunday’s election strengthened the assertion of farmers’ interests in Brussels, and agriculture can appear more prominently on the agenda of the European Parliament (EP), the Minister of Agriculture said on Saturday, according to the Ministry’s announcement sent to MTI.
István Nagy reminded that European agriculture has perhaps never faced as many challenges as it does today; the extraordinary weather conditions caused by climate change, increased input costs, imports from third countries and the overly ambitious tightening of production regulations pose significant challenges to agriculture.
The sum of these factors already endangers the security of existence of European farmers – stated the head of the ministry.
He added that in this situation, stronger representation and greater advocacy is needed in Brussels, which is now possible as a result of the election that took place on Sunday.
According to the Minister of Agriculture, it is essential to see agriculture not as the cause of climate change, but as part of the solution, and to make farmers interested in the application of more sustainable production practices.
By guaranteeing food security, European producers provide essential public goods to all EU citizens, therefore food sovereignty and the guarantee of food security must be part of the European Union’s strategic autonomy – emphasized István Nagy.
