István Nagy: the aim of the Hungarian EU presidency is to make agriculture one of the most important policies of the cycle
During the Hungarian EU presidency starting on July 1st, we will strive to include agriculture in the most important policies of the next EU cycle, the Minister of Agriculture stated on Monday in Luxembourg.
István Nagy said at the press conference following the meeting of the agriculture ministers of the EU member states: Hungary wants to ensure that the agriculture of the future is crisis-proof, competitive, sustainable, farmer-centered and knowledge-based.
Agricultural files not yet closed by the Belgian presidency will be taken forward by the Hungarian presidency, but Hungary will also open new files, such as action against food waste or soil protection, he said.
Since part of the Hungarian presidency is taking place in an interim phase, Hungary wants to give guidelines to the next European Commission in the field of agriculture. During the presidency, council conclusions must be adopted that deal with what the common agricultural policy should be for the next five years, and what simplifications and new rules should come into effect – he detailed.
“We hope that in the future we will be able to implement a new common agricultural policy that will be much simpler and more efficient”
he added.
