Artists and pink trucks raise awareness of the fight against breast cancer
Hungary has a persistently high number of female breast cancer cases, nearly 170,000 since 2020. Waberer’s, Volvo Trucks Hungary and Wáberer Medical Central are joining forces again to draw attention to this alarming trend during October Breast Cancer Month. As a novelty this year, contemporary writers and artists have also joined the initiative to use art to present the physical and emotional stages of the disease from diagnosis to recovery.
Hungarian statistics on cancer are looking grim. According to the latest data, 69,410 new cancer cases were registered in Hungary in 2024. The number of cases of female breast cancer per 100,000 people was 145 in 2020, more than 151 in 2021, and nearly 170 from 2022 to 2024 – meaning the trend has not improved for years. The statistics also remind us that awareness and regular screening are crucial, as modern therapies in the early stages of the disease significantly increase the life expectancy of those affected.
The Bridge to Health Association emphasizes that early detection can save lives. Monthly self-examination is recommended from the age of 20, annual regular screening is recommended for those over 40, public health screening is mandatory every two years between the ages of 45 and 65, but continuous monitoring is also necessary for those over 65.
Artists enter, exceptional trucks start again
The symbols of the joint October awareness-raising campaign by Waberer’s, Volvo Trucks Hungary and Wáberer Medical Center are the pink-painted Volvo FH Aero trucks, one of which performs transports throughout Europe and the other in Hungary, with female drivers at the wheel. Moreover, the truck on Hungarian roads carries important messages – literally. By scanning the QR code on the side of the truck, anyone can send an encouraging message to those affected on the mozgasbantartjukaremenyt.hu page.
For every message received, the three companies also provide support to the Egészség Hídja – Özszefog a Mellrák Ellen Egyesület, which has been working to strengthen prevention and awareness for more than twenty years.
“We are trying to ensure that Waberer’s is present in everyday life not only as an economic actor, but also as a responsible company and that we stand by causes such as the fight against breast cancer. I like this contrast that appears in our joint campaign: the world of trucks, which is fundamentally a masculine medium, draws attention to the fight against breast cancer through two pink-painted vehicles and keeps hope moving. One of the special features of this year’s campaign is that the campaign collaborators invited four artists to present the patients’ journey through their works, from the examination, through waiting and learning the results, to treatment and recovery. Anna T. Szabó and János Lackfi each joined the initiative with a story, while Panni Czikkely and Dorottya Kránitz each with a picture.
The works will be on display in the Wáberer Medical Center building and will draw attention to the journey of those affected by the disease as a permanent exhibition, while strengthening those affected in the belief that there is hope.
