Workplace relationships: falling in love with a colleague (an introduction)
I have been planning to write about this topic for 35 years, since I have fallen in love with a man at my workplace – later this man became my husband. In this new series of articles I am going to introduce couples who have met at their workplace and have been together ever since. Workplace relations can be divided into two groups: those in the first group are connected to one’s job and in the second we find relations based on sympathy. Nowadays dress codes regulate how workers should look and both men and women try to look good to impress each other. We spend most of our time at the workplace, at multinational companies sometimes 10-14 hours a day. Lots of young people work at these companies and they inevitably get interested in each other. But emotional relationships at the workplace carry risks as well – those involved can’t be sure how the whole thing will end: with a marriage or a breakup. It is better to be cautious, especially if these emotions are shared between boss and subordinate. However, it is also true that if one doesn’t take risks they won’t succeed. It is very important for everyone in life to find a partner – sometimes it is the workplace where one’s ‘other half’ can be found. What is more, a balanced private life is a prerequisite of workplace success: if a worker knows that everything is alright at home, they will perform better at the workplace.
