MTÜ CEO: this year could be another record year in tourism
This year could be another record year in tourism after 2019, according to the CEO of the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ). On Thursday, Péter Horváth emphasized in Trend Fm’s A nap vendege program that this expectation is also confirmed by the January data. “The tourism sector performed well at the end of 2022, and it was managed to carry over to the beginning of 2023 as well”, he said. In January, travelers spent 1.9 million guest nights in Hungary, which is a 15 percent increase compared to a year earlier, he said.
After a promising start, the number of reservations in February has already reached 2 million guest nights, which is 10 percent higher than last February. After 5.9 million guest nights in the first quarter of last year, forecasts count for 6.3 million this year, he said
He emphasized: several important summer events will have a great impact on tourism. For example, the series of events organized around the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 – European Capital of Culture and the World Athletics Championships in August will bring many guests to Hungary. Those interested have already booked 189,000 nights for the World Cup, and from a tourism point of view, television broadcasts of the competitions also represent a significant advertising value, he added.
