MTÜ: the St. Stephen’s Day program series brought a sold-out weekend to Budapest
The programs of the series of events organized for Hungary’s birthday were accompanied by an unprecedented interest; based on the data of the National Tourist Information Center (NTAK), the accommodation facilities in the capital closed the week with a full house, the utilization of which reached almost 80 percent, 7 percentage points higher than the previous year – the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ) informed MTI.
According to the announcement, nearly 70,000 guests spent 128,000 guest nights in Budapest between August 18 and 20, so the guest traffic exceeded the previous year’s results by 17 percent. In addition, the number of one-day visitors also increased by nearly 30 percent, so this year more than 1 million people traveled to the capital for at least one day.
The impact of St. Stephen’s Day on tourist traffic is outstanding: twice as many compared to 2021, and 17 percent more guests booked accommodation in Budapest compared to last year’s holiday weekend. Based on the NTAK data, the majority of the accommodations were filled by foreign guests, which is also due to the start of the World Athletics Championships. A significant part of the guest nights, 83 percent, were booked by foreign travelers.
The event, which was also awarded the Oscar of the international events industry, received 7 percent more guests from the countryside and 19 percent more guests from outside the country than last year, MTÜ reported.
