MTÜ: Almost 8 million guest nights were registered by rural hotels in June-July
More guests stayed at rural accommodations in June-July than in last year’s record year. In the first two months of summer, according to data from the National Tourist Information Center (NTAK), 2.9 million foreign and domestic travelers spent 7.9 million guest nights outside the capital. In addition to Budapest and Lake Balaton, several rural destinations are considered summer hits. The destinations with the largest growth in visitor traffic among domestic guests were Szeged and its surroundings, and Debrecen and its surroundings for foreign visitors. Among the settlements, Velence and Balatonkenese achieved the greatest increase in traffic.
Based on the data of the National Tourist Information Center, it was not only the waterfront experiences that enticed visitors, but also the cultural heritage. In the first two months of the summer, more than two-thirds of Hungarian accommodation traffic took place outside the capital, 71% of which was domestic and 29% international.
Some destinations grew in popularity among domestic guests, while others were visited by foreign travelers to a greater extent compared to the previous year. The largest increase in domestic guest traffic in rural areas, with nearly 6% more guest nights, was seen in Szeged and its region, where domestic guests spent 127,000 guest nights. The second highest domestic growth was shown by the Sopron-Fertő area, where, according to the data, the accommodations registered 93 thousand domestic guest nights in the first two summer months, which exceeds the destination’s previous year’s result by 4%. While Gyula and its region, also on the podium, produced a domestic traffic increase of nearly 3% with 140,000 domestic guest nights. In terms of foreign guest nights, the biggest increase outside of Budapest was achieved in Debrecen and its region. Here, international guests spent 245,000 nights in the first two months of the summer, exceeding the value of a year ago by more than 8%. Foreign guests of Balaton also spent almost 6% more, 939 thousand nights, while the third largest increase of almost 3% was enjoyed by the Mátra-Bükk area with 129 thousand international guest nights.
