MTÜ: sixty applicants submitted one hundred and twenty works to the Tokaj Mosaic Design Competition

Sixty applicants submitted one hundred and twenty works to the Tokaj City Municipality and the Hungarian Tourist Agency (MTÜ) competition on the past and present of the Tokaj wine region.

According to the MTÜ’s announcement on Friday, applications for the Tokaj Mosaic Design Competition were open until June 15, and the submitted graphic designs are currently being evaluated. The winning entries will be selected by a six-member professional jury. The results will be announced on August 1, when it will also be revealed which graphics will be used to create the mosaics decorating the Tokaj Old Town.

“During the evaluation, the jury will particularly examine the connection of the entry to the graphic themes, the exciting approach, and the unique stylistic features. It will also strongly evaluate whether the design provides an interactive experience, as a result of which visitors would be happy to take photos in front of the creation,”

– they wrote in the announcement.

According to the information, the members of the judging committee evaluating the entries are art historian Júlia Bacsek; Ágnes Herczeg, chairwoman of the board of trustees of the Hungarian Garden Heritage Foundation; and Zsófia Jakab, CEO of the Hungarian Fashion & Design Agency (MDDÜ). As they wrote, the professionalism of the jury is also strengthened by Rudolf Mihály, chief architect of Tokaj, writer Zsolna Ugron, and graphic artist Attila Auth, head of the Department of Graphics of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts (MKE).

The total prize money for the competition is more than ten million forints. The list of award winners will be published on the website www.tokajmozaikpalyazat.hu.

Eight works of art will be realized from the ideas of the winning applicants. The works of art, measuring almost 3 square meters, will be exhibited at various points in the medieval part of Tokaj.

The task of the applicants was to present the rich past of the city of Tokaj, through the depiction of historical scenes and cultural symbols of the settlement. The applicants, aged 18-35, could create on topics such as Tokaj Castle, the world-famous vines, the legendary cellar labyrinth or the world-famous Tokaji Aszú, among others, they announced.
