MTÜ: Chinese inbound tourism is picking up
Chinese inbound tourism in Hungary and Europe is becoming more and more active – said the CEO of the Hungarian Tourist Agency (MTÜ) at the Europe-China Tourism Dialogue press conference organized by the MTÜ in Budapest as the opening of the consecutive Hungarian presidency of the Council of the European Union.
László Könnyid said: the event is designed to speed up the recovery of tourism between Europe and China, and it also initiates a tourism dialogue between governments and professional actors. The policy conference organized with the participation of nearly 250 Chinese and EU professionals also focuses on data-driven sector management and digitalization.
He highlighted: last year, more than 110,000 Chinese guests spent more than 305,000 guest nights in Hungary, the latter representing a three-fold and the former a four-fold increase compared to the previous year. So far this year, 76,000 Chinese tourists have spent more than 210,000 guest nights in our country, which is a favorable figure when compared to the region, said the CEO, adding: there is every chance that all indicators throughout the year will surpass the level of 2019 before the epidemic.
The fact that 21 weekly flights from seven Chinese cities already bring Chinese tourists to Budapest contributes to the results, making it the largest number of flights from China to the Hungarian capital in the region. According to the analysis of the European Travel Commission (ETC), the recovery of Chinese tourism in Europe is progressing more slowly because the frequency of flights has not yet reached the level before the epidemic, he noted.
