MTÜ: Hungarian tourism is one of the biggest winners of the World Athletics Championships
The tourism results of the World Athletics Championships held in Budapest between August 19 and 27 exceeded all previous expectations, the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ) told MTI on Thursday.
According to the announcement, based on data from the National Tourist Information Center (NTAK), more than 170,000 guests and 460,000 guest nights spent the night in the capital during the competition. During the third largest sporting event in the world, a significant part of the hotels were full, and the occupancy rate of the hotels was over 80 percent on average during the days of the World Cup. Tourists spent 71 percent of hotel guest nights in 4- and 5-star hotels. As a result of the outstanding interest, accommodation revenues more than doubled compared to the same period in 2022.
They pointed out that competitors and tourists from almost all over the world came to Hungary during the World Athletics Championships. According to the data of the National Tourist Information Center, around 200 countries traveled to Budapest accommodation during this time, 85 percent of the guest nights were given by foreign tourists. Compared to last year, there were almost 38 percent more foreign visitors in these days. Visitors came from almost every continent, but most of them traveled to Budapest from the largest sending markets: nearly 9 percent of all foreign guest nights were booked by the British, 9 percent by Germans, and 8 percent by Italian guests, but a good number were received by Americans, Israelis, Spaniards, and Poles. and French travelers as well. In addition, the world competition also attracted domestic tourists to the capital: compared to 2022, the number of domestic guest nights increased by 22 percent during the competition.
