MOHU: beverage packaging return system reaches new records
The beverage deposit return system has set new records, with three billion bottles, cans and jars being returned to circulation through the MOHU REpont system in just over a year and a half, exceeding the company’s expectations and international experience – MOHU Zrt. announced to MTI on Friday.
In the first six months, the redemption rate in Hungary rose to a record level of over 80 percent. The average number of redemptions per day is 8-10 million, but on some days in the summer this number exceeded 15 million. According to the information, the average performance is 200 pieces per second over a 12-hour opening time. Customers requested redeemable vouchers worth 120 billion forints at the REponts.
Based on the daily average, MOHU partners have to empty an average of 50 vending machines nationwide per minute.
The return of beverage packaging is not only important for environmental protection, but also brings economic benefits to retail partners. The handling fee paid for returns has already exceeded 20 billion forints since the launch of the system.
According to the information, the REpont service is already available at approximately 5,000 locations across the country.
MOHU aims to further expand the network, primarily supporting small settlements and small shops, and creating independent return points with the participation of entrepreneurs. Therefore, from September, MOHU will pay a much higher – more than double – handling fee for smaller shops and voluntary joining partners than before.
