MOHU: more than two billion PET bottles, cans and glass have been returned through the REpont system since launch
More than two billion PET bottles, cans and glass have been returned through the MOHU REpont system since its launch last July, a good example of Hungary’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable management, MOHU told MTI on Tuesday.
It was highlighted that, according to estimates, only around 30 percent of beverage packaging was recycled in Hungary before the concession.
Thanks to the internationally proven return system, i.e. DRS, the rate of return has increased significantly, which not only has a positive impact on the environment, but also enables the efficient recycling of valuable raw materials.
Automatic return points are available to consumers at more than 3,000 points and manual return points at 1,700 points.
Most people still request the return fee in the form of a coupon that can be purchased in stores. More than 80 percent choose this option, so customers have so far requested more than 80 billion forints back so that they can buy it right away in the store.
About 15-20 percent of users transfer the amount due for the bottles to their bank accounts through MOHU’s self-developed REpont application, and nearly two hundred million forints have already been donated to charities, the statement said.
They explained that
MOHU pays stores a handling fee for every bottle returned. The stores are responsible for operating the return in stores, such as operating, cleaning and emptying the vending machines.
MOHU’s goal is for Hungary to reach the 65 percent recycling rate set by the EU and to reduce the landfill rate to below 10 percent.
