MOHU: customers return 6 million beverage packages per day
In the past few days, customers have already returned 6 million bottles, jars and cans per day, the number of returns has increased to 150 million in Hungary in a few weeks – MOHU Mol Hulladékgazdálkodó Zrt. told MTI on Friday.
In a statement, the company emphasized: in addition to its positive environmental protection effects, the redemption system also serves the domestic industry in the long term, because it measures, counts, groups and transports beverage packaging waste according to material, which can strengthen the domestic recycling industry and help its planning.
MOHU’s commitment is to fulfill the minimum 90 percent redemption in Hungary by the third year from the start.
According to the data, the manufacturers paid more than HUF 5.5 billion in redemption fees until August 16. The amount reimbursed to consumers already reaches HUF 7.2 billion, that is, MOHU advances almost HUF 1.7 billion to the manufacturers, because the manufacturers only pay this amount in retrospect, on a monthly basis.
In almost 90 percent of the redemptions, the customers ask for the money back in the form of a voucher that can be redeemed in the store, which so far amounts to more than HUF 6 billion. About 13 percent of the redeemers transfer the money to a bank account, and about 0.4 percent donate it to charity.
