MOHU: 5,200 return points are in operation, but 47 larger settlements still do not have RE points – public “enema” machines may be introduced
Across Hungary, deposit-return beverage packaging can be redeemed at around 5,200 locations within the MOHU system; however, there are still 47 settlements with more than 10,000 residents where the service is not yet available – Csaba László Bozóki said in an interview with Index.hu.
According to the interview, in 2025 more than 3 billion bottles/cans/glass containers were returned, with the redemption rate approaching 90% (Bozóki put it at 90%), which is considered outstanding in a European comparison.
Among the next developments, the system may expand with the installation of public-space, so-called bulk-feed (“pour-in”) machines – the first such unit has already been inaugurated in Budapest – and they are also examining whether, in the future, the packaging of certain low milk-content drinks (such as iced coffees) could be included in the refundable scope. At the same time, according to the statement, they do not currently plan to bring yoghurt bottles or jam jars into the MOHU-managed packaging stream.
