MLBKT: BMI seasonally adjusted value for January: 49.3

The January 2026 Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) decreased from 54.0 points in December. In January, respondents reported a contraction in the manufacturing industry compared to the previous month, the Hungarian Logistics, Procurement and Inventory Management Association (MLBKT) announced on Monday.

Compared to previous January monthly values, this year’s value is lower than the long-term January average of 52.6 percent.

Most of the sub-indices examined in the survey decreased. Seven of the individual indices are in the recovery range.

A BMI value above 50 percent indicates a recovery in manufacturing activities, while a value below 50 percent indicates a shift towards recession.

The new orders index decreased by 6.6 percentage points, but continues to show expansion. Production volume decreased, the index value fell by 5.7 percentage points compared to the previous month. The employment index is below 50.0 points this time, the index value decreased by 2.6 percentage points – announced the MLBKT.

The delivery lead time index is again below 50.0, its value increased by 0.5 percentage points this month. The index value of purchased stocks decreased by 6.1 percentage points, but continues to show expansion, the company said.

Among the foreign market indicators, the import index decreased by 4.7 percentage points, and the export index decreased by 4.9 percentage points.

Purchase prices increased, the index value increased by 0.5 percentage points compared to the previous month. The purchase quantity index decreased by 7.2 percentage points, the index indicates a more moderate increase. The index of finished goods stocks fell by 9.4 percentage points, the survey shows.
