Amazon opens “mini-fulfillment centres” to speed up same-day deliveries
Amazon has opened “mini-fulfillment centres”, in four US cities, with the aim of speeding up same-day deliveries.
The new “mini fulfillment centres”, which are about the tenth of the size of a traditional fulfillment centre (around 100,000 square feet), will reduce the time needed to carry out a same-day delivery down to just a few hours for Prime members based in one of the four the areas.
According to Amazon, Prime members will be able to choose from up to three million items that are marked “Today by”. Products can be ordered throughout the day in four windows.
In addition, Amazon said that the new facilities will provide more delivery jobs, including via its Amazon Flex program, and help reduce its carbon footprint, since they’re located closer to its customers. The company is due to include additional cities to the program later this year.
