Magazine: What shall I call you?
When first hearing the name Penelope Cruiser, one thinks of a Spanish sports car or a Brazilian dancer. In fact, the above name designates a margarita-type cocktail of New York’s 675 Bar: tequila with brown sugar, triple sec, rum and pineapple juice. At the Mermaid in Greenwich Village they serve drinks with names like Algerian Typist, Thief Beggar and Mr Rufus. After taking cocktail styling to perfection, bar owners started focusing on cocktail names in the US. Calling guests’ attention to cocktails is half a success: Adam Schuman, of Brooklyn’s Fatty ’Cue gave the name Chupacabra (a mythological werewolf) to one of his new creations. Guests ask what is in the cocktail and when they hear the story they usually order one.
