Hungarian employees often cannot fully complete their work tasks even during their vacation, and this is not only due to individual but also organizational reasons. Two out of ten employees surveyed reported that there is no developed replacement system at their workplace, so they try to solve these situations with their own methods. Five out of ten employees reported minor problems, and three out of ten were satisfied in this area – according to a recent, representative survey by Profession.hu.

For many, vacation is the highlight of the year, the time when they can break away from the everyday rush and let go of work tasks. The number of days of vacation that is appropriate and optimal for someone depends on the job and the individual, but of course the time that has passed since the previous vacation also matters. The expert recommendation is basically for two weeks, but this is only implemented in a few cases, and even during the vacation, many people use their computers and phones.

Business phone calls, emails during vacation

Half of employees have a habit of working to a greater or lesser extent during their vacation. The same proportion of respondents answer business phone calls: 29 percent of them said that they only answer extremely important calls, while 21 percent answer them in every case. The situation is similar with business correspondence: half of the respondents also follow their business correspondence during their vacation, 22 percent of them on a daily basis, while 30 percent do not check work emails at all during their vacation. The majority of those who monitor incoming messages not only read them, but also respond to them: while 60 percent only respond to the most important inquiries, 16 percent respond to all emails, and 24 percent only scan them but do not send a reply. In light of this, it is not surprising that 42% of respondents do not experience any accumulated work upon returning from their vacation, as they have mostly completed it during their vacation.

How do we vacation?

The general recession is barely noticeable in planned vacation expenses, as 39% of Hungarian employees are spending approximately the same amount of money on their vacation as last year, 31% more, while 30% less. Two-thirds of employees taking vacations this year are vacationing exclusively domestically. Half of employees are planning or have planned to take a few days off in Hungary, and 19% are planning at least a week off, also domestically. Roughly one-third of those vacationing abroad (or abroad as well), 16% are vacationing for a few days, and 22% are vacationing for at least a week.

Employees expected to take an average of 12 days off this summer, with those with children planning to take slightly more, 14 days, while those without children planned to take 11 days off during the summer. When looking at the issue by job type, a similar difference can be observed: those doing manual work take an average of 11 days off during the summer, while senior managers and directors usually take 14 days off for this purpose.
