We can save millions with cheap travel insurance

Although the majority of passengers are now planning their winter trips more consciously and with due caution, there are still those who do not take travel insurance into account or try to save on this rather low travel item. However, the risk of accidents is significantly higher during the skiing season than during a regular trip abroad. According to data from UNIQA Biztosító Zrt., the rate of passenger accidents increases significantly in the peak season between January and February compared to the entire year. While accidents accounted for 21.22 percent of travel insurance claims reported between January and December 2025, this rate was much higher at the beginning of the year, at 36.84 percent.

In addition, the costs incurred at this time can be quite high. Hospital care, possible surgery, medicines and check-ups, or even the cost of repatriation impose a significant financial burden on the injured party – not to mention that a helicopter mountain rescue costs an average of 2.5 million forints, and this amount can only be reimbursed with appropriate travel insurance. Rented sports equipment can also be damaged, the costs of which, in the absence of insurance, must also be borne by the person who suffered the accident. An accident can also occur in which the insured person does not suffer any injuries, but he or his own insurance company must assume financial responsibility for the damage caused to others.

UNIQA Biztosító Zrt. paid out an average of 360 thousand forints to those involved in passenger accidents in January and February of last year, and the largest amount of damage paid exceeded 5 million forints. Based on all this, it is worth considering taking out travel insurance, available from a few hundred forints per day. All the more so, since the products offered by individual insurance companies not only provide protection for the insured in the event of a skiing accident, but can also be of great help in the event of other unwanted events – for example, they can save the traveler from millions of euros in costs in the event of an illness or damage or loss of luggage.
