What has happened to the Hungarian sugar factories?
More than 20 years ago, 12 sugar factories were operating in Hungary, now only one left in Kaposvár. The government decided to investigate the privatization process of the domestic sugar production and destruction of it.
After the regime change in 1990 the harvested area of sugar beet was 131 thousand hectares, that meant a 600 thousand tons of sugar production. Despite the more or less drastic changes in the area, the signs of decline only occurred in 1996 for the first time. The most significant decrease occurred in 2008, when the harvested area was only 10 thousand hectares, only 24 percent of the previous year's 41 thousand hectares – reports mfor.hu.
