MGyT: peppermint is the herb of the year
The Medicinal Plant Department of the Hungarian Pharmaceutical Society (MGyT) has chosen peppermint as the medicinal plant of the year in 2024, the organization announced to MTI on Saturday.
According to the announcement, peppermint (aka peppermint, Latin Mentha piperita) is a perennial plant grown in Europe and North America, whose leaves and essential oil are used in medicine. The fact that it is one of the oldest cultivated medicinal plants shows its importance, they added. It was also reported that tea and essential oil made from peppermint leaves are used in folk medicine to relieve gall and intestinal complaints and cold symptoms, and externally to relieve skin itching and pain. According to numerous clinical studies, peppermint oil effectively relieves digestive complaints, which is primarily related to its antispasmodic effect, they wrote.
They went on to say that tests also prove its choleretic effect
It is used as an expectorant for colds. Due to its antibacterial, cooling and mild local anesthetic effect, the essential oil and the menthol obtained from it are also used externally, for example, in cases of stings and rashes. It relieves joint and muscle pain by increasing blood circulation in the treated area. The goal of the Medicinal Plant Department of the MGyT is to contribute to the spread of the professional use of medicinal plants – the announcement states.
