During the last three weeks of dry weather, the top few centimeters of the soil have already dried up, sown wheat would need a soaking rain to germinate – the National Meteorological Service wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

They wrote that during the past week no precipitation fell at all in most parts of the country, only a few small rains and showers occurred, but the amount of precipitation did not exceed two millimeters anywhere, the last significant rain fell on the last day of September and the first day of October. After the rainy September, October has so far been dry, so the amount of precipitation for the past 30 and 90 days is again turning into a lack of precipitation in an increasingly large area. They added: the layer of the soil close to the surface has dried a lot, the upper few centimeters are completely dry. About five centimeters deep, there is a layer that is sometimes thinner, sometimes thicker, and mostly still sufficiently moist, and then thoroughly dried out in the summer, in deeper layers (typically below 60-80 centimeters) there is also little moisture, there would be plenty of space for autumn and winter precipitation. According to the agrometeorological analysis, the temperature was several degrees above the average values in the past few days, the air warmed up to around 20 degrees Celsius in the afternoon and the dawns were mostly mild.

Sufficient moisture is available in the soil to sow the fall crops and to create a good seed bed

On the other hand, the fields that have already been sown would benefit from a sprinkling, so that germination starts well, because the top few centimeters of the loosened soil has already dried out – they wrote. According to the analysis, there may be frost in several places in the eastern part of the country on Friday, and then the weather will ease. Next week, frost is unlikely and the temperature will rise to around 20 degrees again in the afternoon. A wave of precipitation is expected from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning, from which, according to current calculations, mostly 2-10 millimeters of precipitation is promised, less than this is likely in the southeast. About half of the country is expected to receive enough rain to germinate the sown winter wheat, they wrote.
