Metro modernises fresh logistics with artificial intelligence

The wholesaler is implementing software from Finnish technology provider Relex Solutions, supported by consultancy firm Accenture, with artificial intelligence playing a central role in optimising operations.

At the heart of the initiative is Metro’s “Ultra-Fresh” programme, designed to improve the management of perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables and other fresh products. The new system will enable more accurate demand forecasting, better alignment of shelf life and delivery schedules, and automated ordering decisions. The company aims to enhance product freshness, reduce food waste and lower storage costs.

According to Alexander Stepannikov, who is responsible for fresh product disposition at Metro, managing ultra-fresh categories requires “precision, speed and close collaboration” across the entire supply chain. With the new solution, Metro expects to make better day-to-day decisions, resulting in fresher products and a more reliable offering for customers.

The system will optimise the flow of goods by aligning demand, shelf life and logistics processes, ensuring faster and more efficient operations. Metro operates in more than 30 countries, serving customers such as hotels, restaurants, caterers and independent retailers through both wholesale outlets and delivery services.

Relex Solutions already works with major retailers including Edeka, Rewe and Rossmann. According to the company, the new system will help Metro significantly reduce waste, improve freshness and streamline operations across its entire network.
