Milestone in Hungarian sustainable architecture: PENNY opened the country’s first purely wooden store in Aba
A unique development has been added to Hungarian retail: PENNY opened a store in Abán that, among other modern solutions, is made of renewable materials, with a wooden support structure. The innovative architectural approach is an environmentally friendly, energy-saving and natural solution, which creates a pleasant indoor climate and a homely atmosphere for shopping.
The building was built using CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) technology, which is currently unique in Hungarian retail, as it is the first store of its kind in Hungary. The large-element, prefabricated wooden structure comes exclusively from sustainable sources and not only enables faster, more precise construction, but also significantly reduces the waste generated during construction and the environmental impact associated with the production of building materials. By using CLT technology instead of non-renewable building materials, the discount chain avoided approximately 160 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
The natural benefits of wood can also be felt in everyday operations: its excellent thermal insulation and moisture-regulating properties create a pleasant indoor climate. In addition, the natural scent and warmth of wood lend the store a homely, friendly atmosphere, which also provides a pleasant experience for customers.
“With the Aba development, we have simultaneously introduced a modern, prefabricated construction solution and taken another significant step towards environmentally conscious investments. The application of CLT technology in retail is considered a pioneer in Hungary today. It is an important milestone for us that we were able to hand over a store that is a leading example of sustainability and efficiency, while creating a special atmosphere for shopping”
– said Zoltán Horváth, Head of Construction at PENNY Hungary.
Just as in the operation of the stores, sustainability plays a prominent role in PENNY’s range: with its fresh, quality products from domestic producers and suppliers, the company supports the Hungarian economy and conscious shopping in the long term.
The new store will provide jobs for 19 people in the area and make everyday shopping easier for those living in the area. PENNY will also be welcoming customers during the holiday season with budget-friendly prices, an attractive selection and quality private label offerings – in fact, the store on Rákóczi Street in Aba is also preparing opening prize draws for visitors between December 11 and 17.
