By exempting menstrual products from VAT and donating them, Tesco supports the reduction of extra expenses for women
On the occasion of the upcoming Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, 2024, Tesco will waive VAT from the price of all its own-brand female intimate hygiene products from June 27, 2024, thus helping women reduce their regular extra costs worth thousands of forints a month. As a typical female workplace, Tesco has been providing free female intimate hygiene products to its employees in the women’s washrooms of its offices, stores and central warehouses since last October. At the same time as its unique initiative to support female customers, the company is donating enough menstrual product packages for a year to its strategic partner, the Ecumenical Aid Organization. The charitable organization delivers one year’s worth of donations to a total of 200 needy women living in temporary homes for families and for female members of families supported by Sure Start children’s homes.
The livelihood crisis of the last period made the financial circumstances of many more difficult and further increased the number of those in need of support. Among those affected, a significant number of women find it even more difficult to cover their regular expenses, as the purchase of intimate hygiene products costs them about HUF 2,000 per month. Tesco’s calculations also confirm the calculations according to which, with a total of 500 cycles, a woman spends an average of HUF 1 million on menstrual products during her lifetime.
In order to minimize these extra expenses, the company launched a unique initiative on the occasion of the upcoming Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, within the framework of which Tesco will waive VAT on the price of all its own-brand female intimate hygiene products, i.e. reduce their consumer price by almost 22 percent from June 27 .
