Apiculture association: about 550,000 tonnes of honey is consumed each year in the European Union
Almost one-third of the world’s honey production, about 550,000 tonnes of honey is consumed a year in the European Union (EU), but EU beekeepers can produce only half of it, the rest are sourced from other regions – Bross Péter, president of the National Hungarian Beekeeping Association told M1 news channel.
Hungarian producers sell two-thirds of their honey abroad, while one-third it is bought by local consumers.
He drew attention to the fact that European consumers prefer honeys from third countries. This means that while ten years ago a Hungarian beekeeper received 2.4 euros per kilo for flower honey, the price now has dropped to 1.7 euros. (MTI)
