The price of snake cucumbers has soared: 1,400–1,700 HUF/kg on the wholesale market, up to 1,000–1,100 HUF/piece in stores
At the beginning of the year, the price of snake cucumbers in Hungary increased dramatically: according to wholesale market data, fresh cucumbers were priced in the range of 1,400–1,700 forints/kg, while 2–3 months earlier they were around 700–900 forints/kg – meaning that the price practically doubled compared to the autumn level.
The price increase was also reflected in retail: in some stores, a piece of snake cucumber is available for around 1,000 forints, or even 1,100 forints. According to analysts, several factors may be behind this: seasonal supply fluctuations, the role of imports, and rising logistics and production costs.
High prices are particularly sensitive in the winter-early spring period, when demand for fresh vegetables is stable, while a significant part of the supply comes from imports and greenhouse production.
