German retailer Lidl has reinforced its commitment to Spain, investing in the country’s economy and its own expansion.

The discount retailer allocated €8.2 billion to purchasing Spanish products and its growth initiatives in 2024, consolidating its position as the third-largest food retailer in the country with net sales reaching €6.95 billion – a 5.7% increase compared to the previous year, ESM Magazine reports.

Lidl made purchases of over €7.9 billion from Spanish suppliers, or 6% more year-on-year, spending approximately €3.3 billion on fruit and vegetables and emerging as the top buyer of Spanish produce.

More than half of these purchases worth more than €4 billion were exported to about 30 countries.

Investment

The company invested over €330 million in 2024, opening around 30 new stores and surpassing the 700-store mark in Spain.

It also expanded its logistics network with a new platform in Constantí, Tarragona. This growth was accompanied by the creation of 1,200 new jobs, bringing their total workforce to approximately 19,700 people in Spain, with a 3.5% salary increase.

Claus Grande, general manager of Lidl Spain, said, “In 1994, we put down firm roots in Spain, and today we reinforce that commitment by generating stable employment year after year, promoting domestic products, and growing sustainably, with the goal of continuing to be the go-to supermarket for an increasing number of households.”

In 2025, Lidl plans to further accelerate its growth with a similar investment on approximately 50 new or modernised stores.

This expansion is expected to create around 1,000 new jobs and expanding its workforce to more than 20,000 staff members.

The retailer also aims to exceed €8 billion in annual purchases from Spanish suppliers.
