“We have developed long-term plans and tasks that will provide practical forest managers with guidance in the future,” said András Mocz, the ministry’s deputy state secretary responsible for forests, according to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) on Friday.

The negative effects of climate change do not spare Hungarian forests either, while forests are considered the most important climate protection infrastructure. Therefore, the goal of the forum is to prepare a climate adaptation strategy and action plan to facilitate the adaptation of forestry, which will support the long-term survival of forests, carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation with practical, legal and policy tools by 2026.

Nearly a hundred experts participated in the 8 working groups established at the inaugural meeting of the forum, including practical forest managers, researchers, educators, nature conservation and water management specialists, administrative actors and interest groups. Separate expert groups deal with emerging issues of forestry water management, professional and economic analysis, monitoring and registration, wildlife management, reproductive material management, development policy and regulation.

According to the announcement, András Mocz highlighted that responsible planning should create forests that adapt to the negative effects of climate change, provide ecosystem services and serve the protection of nature, soil and water. The work of the inter-sectoral forum, which operates under the direction of the Deputy Secretary of State for Forests of the Ministry of Agriculture and with the support of the University of Sopron and the Institute of Forestry, is coordinated by the National Chamber of Agriculture, its meetings are public and can be followed online.
