The acquisition of this year’s grown Virginia tobaccos has started: the yield and the quality is lower than last year’s – said Bittner Imre, CEO of Universal Leaf Tobacco (ULT) Magyarország Zrt., owner of the fermenting plant in Nyíregyháza. The drought affected the tobbacco badly, it is provisionally estimated that crop will be at least 15 percent below the crop of the previous year.

The company calculates with the buying up about 4,800 tons of Virginia  and 2,200 tons of Burley tobacco. The weather also had an adverse effect on quality, the crop became weaker than the average. The buying of the crop will last until the end of October, beginning of November with a daily 120 to 130 tons – said the head of the American-owned tobacco company. (Agromonitor.hu)
