The highly pathogenic H5N1 subtype of the bird flu virus has been confirmed by the National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) in a roast duck farm in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County; the liquidation of the stock has begun immediately, and the epidemiological investigation is in progress – the authority announced on its website on Wednesday.

According to the information, the disease was detected in a stock of nearly 20 thousand roast ducks in the Tiszajenő settlement, after an increased number of animals showed lethargy, loss of appetite, nervous system symptoms, and death. A 3-kilometer radius protection zone and a 10-kilometer radius observation (surveillance) zone have also been designated around the farm, it was announced. Nébih draws the attention of animal keepers to the fact that strict and consistent compliance with disease control regulations is essential to prevent another large-scale avian influenza epidemic. They stressed that it is particularly important that in counties classified as high-risk, commercial poultry is kept indoors, and that all farms strictly comply with this regulation. Since the avian influenza virus is present in wild birds, it is of paramount importance to minimize the possibility of poultry and wild birds meeting in order to avoid the spread of the virus from wild birds to poultry, they noted.

The authority also drew farmers’ attention to the change in the restocking rules

Multi-phase, fattened waterfowl flocks – including stuffing material and waterfowl under stuffing – that were liquidated after October 1, 2025 due to avian influenza disease can only be restocked after achieving national immunity in accordance with the requirements of the World Organization for Animal Health.
