Another evil
A ban by local authorities in Los Angeles on the opening of new fast food restaurants in the southern part of the city has been extended for another year. City officials are convinced that fast food restaurants play a major role in the spreading of obesity, especially among children. Some measures like compelling restaurants to inform guests of calorie values on their menus are understandable, but this decision brings up the issue of civil liberties contra public health.. It is also rather doubtful that fast food restaurants are the only reasons of obesity. Fortunately, legislation of this kind is sometimes rejected. For example, a bill whereby restaurants would have been compelled to refuse to serve overweight guests has been rejected by the state of Mississippi.
