Ahold Delhaize doubles presence in Romania
Ahold Delhaize is doubling its footprint in Romania with the acquisition of local player Profi Rom Food, a former part of the Louis Delhaize group.
The Dutch retail group has paid 1.3 billion euros for Romanian supermarket chain Profi Rom Food SRL (Profi for short), a food retailer with 1,654 shops that earned sales of 2.5 billion euros last year. According to Ahold Delhaize, Romania is an attractive, growing market and the Profi chain complements its current presence of 969 shops through Mega Image, the group’s current chain in the country.
Ahold Delhaize expects to generate significant sales growth and synergies from the transaction. The acquisition has yet to be approved and is expected to close in 2024.
Profi, a former Louis Delhaize group chain, is present in Romania since 2000. In 2016, the group was sold to investment fund MEP Retail Investments, part of Mid Europa Partners.
