MasterCard PayPass using doublead in one year

As of Q3 2008, there were about 44 million MasterCard PayPass cards and devices in use at nearly 135,000 merchant locations worldwide, including vending, taxis, tollbooths and transit.

 Contactless payment continued to gather
momentum in Europe, with the first MasterCard PayPass transaction
taking place in the Russian Federation and the first Maestro
PayPassTM transaction in the Netherlands; the introduction of
PayPassat a national level in Portugal with SIBS and in Slovakia with
VOLKSBANK; an agreement to develop contactless payments on mobile
phones with Telecom Italia; and the facilitation of innovative new
acceptance locations for contactless payments, including the Coke
Live Festival in Krakow, Poland. PayPass card and device issuance has
more than doubled during the past 12 months. Besides New York,
MasterCard is also involved in similar transit projects in Liverpool
buses, London taxis, Paris, Taiwan’s rapid transit and PATH train
services in New Jersey.
