VAT cut can double fish consumption
The Ministry of Agriculture has recently taken the initiative to reduce the VAT on fish to 5 percent. They hope to whiten the sector and fish consumption will be doubled in a few years.
Németh István, president of the Hungarian Fisheries and Aquaculture Interprofessional Organization (Mahal) told that due to the reduction of VAT on pigs and poultry, a competitive disadvantage occured in the Hungarian fisheries sector. A kilogram of pork without bones is cheaper than a kilo of live carp. This can be offset by the expected amendment. Fish would be cheaper by 15-20 percent, although he added that he is confident that a few percent more profit can remain at the producers as well. (origo, Suhajda Zoltán)
