A fifth of Hungarian online shoppers are still careless
Almost three-quarters of the Hungarian population regularly buys and pays online (69 percent), and almost everyone (97 percent) is aware of the associated risks. Four-fifths of those surveyed use at least one method for their security, but one in five people still do not check the authenticity of payment interfaces – revealed a recent survey by OTP Mobil.
However, conscious internet use is essential to keep ourselves, our data and our money safe online. According to data from the Hungarian National Bank, 2023. II. In the first quarter of the year, we spent nearly 30 percent of the value of card purchases, i.e. HUF 1.23 billion, online in various webshops. Also in this quarter, the number of bank card abuses increased significantly, because there are still many people who do not follow up on phone calls, SMS or e-mails urging payment, and act on instinct due to alarming wording. With a few thoughtless clicks, they can install a virus or an application that gives fraudsters remote access to their devices, with which the perpetrators can even withdraw the entire balance of their bank account.
